Tiwerenge Project

Tiwerenge is a newspaper reading project that buys newspapers for primary and secondary schools. The brainchild of the project is CFED’s founder Albert Sharra who donated $150 from his JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR AWARD prize money confered by MISA Malawi in 2017 to kick start the initiative. The money was used to buy newspapers ( Weekend Nation) for four schools for a period of six months from July 2017 to December 2017. Since then, CFED approaches individuals to support the initiative by adopting schools and buy newspapers for them. As of May 2021, over 20 schools had benefited from the initiative.

In June 2021, Sharra dedicated his birthday which falls on June 1 to fundraise for schools. Between June 1 and June 30, the campaign raised about $800 which was used to purchase Weekend Nation newspapers for 30 schools from 17 of the 28 districts of the country. We have since scaled up the fundraising to donate newspapers to atleast a school in each of the 28 districts. Donations are being made through Account #: 2835525, Acc name: Albert Sharra, Bank: National Bank of Malawi, Type: Current Account. Donors are asked to use their name or chosen school name as reference and to email the proof of payment to albertsharra2@gmail.com and copy in info@cfedmw.org. To subscribe a school for a year, it requires MK42 000 or $54. See article below published article by The Nation newspaper of July 6, 2021.

The aim of the initiative is to bring current affairs closer to students and also to improve reading culture among the school-going children. By April 2019, five schools in Chilomoni Township namely; Mulunguzi CDSS, Michiru CCAP Primary, Mulunguzi Primary, Lumbira CDSS and John Paul II Leadership & IT Institute were receiving free copies. Other schools are Ntambanyama primary school in Thyolo, Kankhate primary school in Mchinji, Livingstonia CDSS in Rumphi, Chitimba CDSS in Rumphi, Vonkeni CDSS in Mulanje. Each of the schools receives a Weekend Nation copy every week.

CFED uses money raised from various activities and also invites alumni to buy newspapers for their former schools. Please email us through info@cfedmw.org or albertsharra2@gmail.com for more.
