In a bid to promote reading culture in primary and secondary schools, Centre for Education and Development (CFED) on Saturday donated 900 copies of Weekend Nation newspaper to be distributed to 30 schools in six months.

The donation follows a 30-day fundraising campaign championed by the co-founder of the organization Albert Sharra who announced on May 31, that he was dedicating his birthday which falls on June 1 to raise money for the initiative. He said the 30 days campaign raised K630 000 (about $800) and the fundraising continues.

“I am glad that some people responded positively to the call and today we are talking of 25 schools reading Weekend Nation. What has fascinated me most is that majority of the adopted schools are in the remotest areas,” he said while thanking Nation Publications Limited for supporting the initiative.

Muloza Community Day Secondary School headteacher Clement Majawa said he is happy that his school is benefiting from the initiative for the second time.

“Muloza has benefitted a lot in sharpening English skills among our students. We keep the newspapers in the libraries and students discuss the content in study circles,” he said.

According to Sharra, the adopted schools will receive a copy of the newspaper every Saturday. The schools are from 19 of the 28 districts of Malawi. Some of the donors include associate professor Boniface Dulani, Dr Titus Divala, Dr Doreen Myrie, Undule Mwakasungula, Innocent Mmkomwa and Kondwani Munthali.
